2014 BMW X5 Review: Release Date Confirmed

The redesigned X5 will carry three engine options when the car goes on sale at authorized BMW dealerships later this year.

The first choice, the xDrive50i variant will be available with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which is expected to deliver at least 450 horsepower (330 kW) at 5,500 rpm with its peak torque reaches at 479 lb-ft or around 650 Nm at 2,000-4,500 rpm. The 4.4L petrol engine benefit from the use of direct-injection feature, Valvetronic and BMW Twin-Power Turbo technology.

As for its fuel efficiency, the direct-injection V8 engine has an average fuel consumption of at least 10,4 to 10,5-liters per 100 km, equivalent to 26,9-27,2 mpg. According to EU standards, the CO2 emissions for this 4,395 cc petrol engine is 242-244 g/km. Speaking about performance, the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i can complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.0 seconds and top speed is limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Regardless of the petrol variant, the German-based automaker also offers common-rail diesel engine with a 2,993 cc capacity in the xDrive30d variant. Under its hood, buyers will find a turbocharger 3.0-liter 6-cylinder in-line diesel engine that also featuring BMW Twin-Power Turbo technology, including direct-injection features and variable inlet geometry for turbocharger.
Common-rail diesel version in the redesigned X5 xDrive30d has a peak power output up to 258 horsepower or around 190 kW at 4,000 rpm and its maximum torque to be achieved at 413 lb-ft or around 560 Nm at 1,500-3,000 rpm. According to EU standards, the average fuel consumption for this six-cylinder engine is rated at 6.2-liters/100 km or is equal to 45,6 mpg. Furthermore, the diesel variant has CO2 emissions up to 162-164 g/km.

However, the new X5 xDrive30d can hit the road with its maximum speed up to 143 mph or around 230 km/h and is able to bring you to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds. Unfortunately, in terms of performance, the xDrive30d variant is even worse compared to the first option.

Next up is the third option, the 2014 BMW X5 M50d is powered by a 3.0-liter common-rail diesel engine (2,993 cc) and get the most benefit from the use of BMW M Performance Twin-Power Turbo technology, which consists of three-turbochargers, variable turbine geometry and high-pressure. In addition, this six-cylinder engine also featuring direct injection with piezo injectors.
The maximum output of this three-turbocharged 3.0L engine can reach at least 381 horsepower (280 kW) at 4,000-4,400 rpm with its peak torque up to 546 lb-ft (740 Nm) at 2,000-3,000 rpm. Meanwhile, the fuel efficiency is rated at 6.7-liters/100 km or around 42,2 mpg with CO2 emissions reach 177 g/km.

In terms of performance, the third option is better than the xDrive30d variant. In addition, the new X5 M50d is able to hit the road up to 155 mph (250 km/h) and will complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 5.3 seconds. This suggests that this third option has a performance that is almost equivalent to the xDrive50i petrol variant.

According to BMW, all engine options will be available with a standard 8-speed automatic gearbox that features several BMW’s advanced technologies, such as Auto Start-Stop features and Proactive Driving Assistant. The engines are available with standard all-wheel-drive system, while the crossover will also offer several optional packages.

Regardless of engine specifications, the 2014 BMW X5 is basically having an exterior design that is almost similar to the previous model year. However, the German automaker gives some important improvements and slightly changes to its exterior design. At the front end, the new model has a different front grille, new aerodynamic bumper as well as featuring LED adaptive headlights available as an optional.

Furthermore, BMW also provides some special touches on the exterior design to enhance its overall characteristics, such as the rear window with Aero Blades and there’s also Air Breathers as well as Air Curtains. If that’s not enough, the new X5 crossover will also be available with the M Sport package for its exterior and interior, which can be ordered by each buyer with certain combinations.
Moving into the cabin, the interior received some benefit from the use of high-quality materials and some important improvements to increase its luxurious ambience and spaciousness. We can see some important features, such as 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrest, 650-1,870-liters for boot capacity and standard automatic tailgate operation. Not only that, the 2014 model year also gets some exclusive touches that include poplar grain wood trim, aluminum hexagon, gloss black accents, oxide silver and much more.

Speaking about its release date, BMW has officially confirmed that the release date for the 2014 BMW X5 is scheduled for November-December 2013. Shortly after that, the crossover will be available at authorized BMW dealer. Unfortunately, the German automaker hasn’t released official pricing details for the 2014 model year.
