Maintenance Tip of the Week

Engine1
There are several reasons to wash your engine at least every year or two. A clean engine will run cooler than a dirty one. You’ll be more apt to tackle routine belt and hose checks and the like if you know you won’t get covered with grime every time you do so. A clean engine will also make it much easier to spot leaks and to service components. Remember to protect sensitive engine components — including the air intake, distributor, and electrical parts — with plastic bags before getting started. Use dishwashing liquid or other grease-cutting detergents and a bristle brush to scrub engine and components surfaces. Rinse thoroughly. Heavy-duty engine cleaning products are available at automotive parts stores. Follow the directions carefully. You may also have your engine professionally steam cleaned.

BMW & Daimler Teaming Up On An Electric Car

Viseom

It’s not very often you hear or the words BMW and Daimler without some sort of competition between the two, but this time the news from the German front is even stranger. BMW and Daimler will cooperate on an electric car.

Visio.M. The Viseo.M is an attractive design, part of a joint venture between both BMW and Mercedes-Benz parent corporation Daimler. To break it down further, the German Federal Ministry itself initiated the Visio.M project for Education and Research (BMBF) purposes with a $14-million start up fund. What is the point of this project? The idea is to get both companies to make a very light and capable electric car both companies could work with. Does this mean Daimler is letting go of its Smart ForTwo? Most likely not, but it seems to show the car conglomerate is now looking elsewhere.

BMW will certainly bring to the table its carbon fiber experience it gained with it acquired stakes into the SGL Carbon SE company. This has helped the company design the beautiful i8 and the amazing little i3, both using a lot of carbon fiber. But this is not the year of outrageous battery chemistry make up, this is the year better energy management. This is why both teams are having a second look in places no one thinks anymore, namely redesigning systems and components, such as anti-lock braking, seatbelts that alone could substantially save up to 15 percent.

The car is definitely a European brainchild, which leads us to believer we are not going to see version here until all of this technology morphs into what this market craves so much for, big, spacious cars. In the meantime, this Visio.M could pass for a SEAT or any other European street performance car. In the end, it is good to see two giant competitive companies teaming up to work on a shared electric car platform. It will be interesting to see what Daimler does with its Viseo.M and BMW with theirs.

New Renderings: 2015 BMW M2

Bmw_2015_m2_renderings

BMW M2 is scheduled to arrive on the market in 2015. The successor of the limited-edition but very successful 1M is built on the new 2 Series Coupe which arrives in dealerships next year.

Compared to its predecessor, the BMW M2 will undergo a longer development phase. With an aggressive package, the M2 will strongly differentiate itself from the M135i hatch and the M235i Coupe model. The M2 is said to sport an unique fascia with large air intakes, wider track and wider rear fenders, as well as a rear spoiler and the signature M four-exhaust pipes.

Furthermore, the M2 will be available only in coupe form with no plans for another body style. At least in the initial phase

Power will be sent to the wheels via the rear-wheel drive platform. Even though in the past we have heard of rumors around a four-cylinder banger powering the M2, Car and Driver says that an upgraded version of the 3.0 liter TwinScroll turbo charged enginemight be used with a total output of 360 horsepower.

The M2 will use BMW’s proven compact rear-wheel-drive platform, shared with the current 1-series and similar to that of the 3-series. An all-wheel driveversion of the M2 is possible in theory, but don’t expect one.

BMW M2 will compete against the Audi RS3, Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG and Volkswagen Golf R.

Rendering artist Jerry Alvarez has put together a new set of renderings that illustrate how the design of the M2 might turn out.

Maintenance Tip of the Week

Engine

Check your belts

At the front of your engine there will be a series of rubber drive belts that loop around various pulleys, driving everything from the alternator to the a/c compressor. Rubber perishes, more so in extreme conditions like those found in an operating engine bay. Get your timing belt and accessory drive belt checked every 25,000 miles, preferably replacing it every 50,000 miles.
