Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Engine oil
Checking and changing oil is critical to keep today’s engines running properly and efficiently. Follow manufacturer guidelines for changing the lubricant – generally, every 3,000 miles or three to six months.
Check the oil level with the engine off and the car parked on a level surface. Open the hood, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, then return it to the oil reservoir. Take it out again and see whether the level is within the acceptable range marked on the dipstick. If you add oil, don’t overfill, which can damage the engine.

BMW 4 Series Goes Long and Low
It continues trends supervised by Karim Habib, who directs BMW brand design. Mr. Habib is credited with the current 7 series (Adrian van Hooydonk heads up design for the entire BMW Group as senior vice president).
The new model is also the beginning of a new and possibly more confusing numerical nomenclature for BMW models.
The company said in its release that “BMW has given the new model its own individual character and a stand-alone design – and, in so doing, has turned “4” into segment shorthand for aesthetic and dynamic appeal. The latest addition to a nomenclature that sees BMW building on the fine tradition of its large BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series Coupes, the “4” stands for greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation from the BMW 3 Series range.”
The 3 Series coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe models are to become 4 Series, with an added image of luxury and exclusivity, much as the sportier models of the 5 Series came to be denoted as 6s. In essence, all the coupes will be even numbered, but the company has not announced a formal change in its model naming policy. “For now, that’s the evident pattern but it’s not a rule,” Matthew Russell, a BMW spokesman, said in an e-mail.
At first glimpse the Concept Four seems most to resemble the 6 and 7 Series tweener called the Gran Coupe. It is Munich’s entrant in the four-door coupe contest to rival Mercedes CLS and Audi A7.
Representing the fourth generation of the 3 Series coupe, for more numerical confusion, the concept is very close to production, judging from comparison with past BMW show cars. It therefore also offers an important look at the overall themes of the evolution of the company’s 3 Series.
The critical theme of the new design is the shifting downward of air handling areas. The familiar kidney shaped grille is there, but the company says it is closed off. The serious business of feeding the engine takes place in a lower apertures whose form follows the LED headlights. These lower air vents are echoed in striking angled exit shapes along the rear valance, which will probably be toned down in the production model.
The metal frames and other details are executed matte metal. The current “double swage” theme of side character lines is made more striking. It leads to visual focus on the large rear fenders expressing BMWs traditional faith in rear-wheel drive.
Also on the side just behind the front wheels are new large parentheses-shaped side vents, which the company called air breathers. They appear to offer aero benefits and resemble the air curtain in front valance that smoothes air flow over front wheels.
Inside the car, familiar BMW forms are carried out in the idea of layering of information. The concept has attractive brown and black leather along with a lush chestnut wood.
The really cool braided leather cupholders are probably a designer’s whimsy for the concept vehicle. And if the flush door handles make it to the factory it will be a surprise as well.
Information about engine options and other beneath-the-skin facts will have to wait for Detroit’s press scrum.

Car Maintenance Tip of the Week
Engine coolant
Replace most engine coolant or antifreeze every 30,000 miles – or every two to three years. Newer formulas, however, may last up to 50,000 miles. To check coolant level, turn the car off and wait for the engine to cool. Locate the coolant reservoir (usually a translucent plastic tank) and eyeball the level of the coolant against the full and low indicators.

2014 BMW 3-series Gran Turismo Spy Photos
What It Is: The 3-series Gran Turismo, a hatchback version of the BMW 3-series that isn’t a regular wagon. (It’s confusing, we know.) This car features a long, sweeping roofline and elongated side glass that terminates with an upwards kink that reminds us more of the Honda Accord Crosstour than the detail made famous by a certain Wilhelm Hofmeister. Judging from these pictures, the Gran Turismo will be taller than the 3-series sedan. In an earlier piece on this car, we generously called the roofline "low and sleek”; we now largely recant that statement.
The 3er GT also features a more upright grille than does the regular sedan, and the headlight detailing has been modified; the strip connecting them with the kidneys has become thicker. The lower front fascia is new, featuring a blocky, fan-blade-like plastic strip above the lower air intakes unless you opt for the M Sport package also pictured here. The taillights are unique, and there is a weird boomerang-y, vent-type substance behind the front wheels that is probably fake, just like the one on the upcoming 4-series coupe and convertible. Could this car eventually be called the 4-series GT? It's possible.
Why It Matters: BMW is hoping to duplicate the success Audi enjoys with the low-slung, Euro-market A5 Sportback, although this pseudo wagon segment also includes less successful stuff like the Crosstour and the recently discontinued Acura ZDX. Stylistically, the GT looks uncomfortably close to the Crosstour, instead of emulating Audi's sleek Sportback models. Complementing the 3-series sedan and station wagon as well as the 4-series coupe and convertible, this new model proves that no niche is too small for BMW to chase other automakers into. Perhaps it will convert a few customers who still think station wagons are uncool.
|
Platform: The new GT shares its platform with the F30 3-series and its derivatives. Rear- and all-wheel drive will be offered. We predict this car won't have the complex, heavy, and relatively useless split-hatchback arrangement of its bigger sibling, the 5-series GT.
Powertrains: The F30 platform offers a number of powertrain options, ranging from 1.6- and 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesels and 2.0-liter gasoline engines to 3.0-liter inline-six diesel and gasoline engines. Theoretically, it also could house the next M3’s powertrain or that of the ActiveHybrid 3. We expect a four-cylinder 328i and a six-cylinder 335i, in addition to the Europe-only 320d and 330d.

World Premiere: BMW i3 Coupe
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
The world premiere of the BMW i3 Concept Coupe sees the BMW Group unveil a particularly nimble and emotive version of its concept for sustainable premium-class motoring with zero local emissions. The study presented at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show has been brought out in parallel to the ongoing development process for getting the first ever all-electric model from the BMW i brand ready for series production, and demonstrates the potential for conceivably extending the model range. The state-of-the-art, clean-cut and open design showcased by the BMW i3 Concept Coupe represents a pioneering form of urban mobility that makes sustainability awareness an intrinsic part of the premium profile. Beyond this, the three-door model employs the design idiom that has been created especially for the BMW i cars to convey an undeniable sense of dynamism and driving pleasure.
The carbon-fibre body’s visual impact is largely shaped by the gracefully flowing coupe roof line and the fresh interpretation of the BMW i “stream flow” design that can be seen in the side window styling, and gives an instant impression of lightness, transparency and streamlined aerodynamic qualities. On the inside, the sense of spaciousness typical of the BMW i brand is combined with an exclusive lounge-style ambience in the two individual rear seats. The BMW i3 Concept Coupe furthermore assumes the title of the world’s first fully networked electric vehicle. Thanks to the inclusion of innovative BMW ConnectedDrive functions that have been devised by BMW i for use in production vehicles, operation of the navigation system as well as the information transfer between the vehicle, the outside world and the driver’s smartphone has been geared towards the specific requirements of e-mobility.
The BMW i3 Concept Coupe sharply focuses the spotlight on the dynamic performance that can be achieved with the purely electric version of the BMW eDrive technology. Like the BMW i3 Concept, the Coupe is also propelled by an electric motor developed by the BMW Group, which develops a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp and peak torque of 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft), and channels its instantaneous power delivery to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. The electric motor draws its energy from the lithium-ion storage cells under the floor. Positioning the battery units here has the effect of lowering the centre of gravity considerably, which further adds to the vehicle’s sensationally agile handling.
The LifeDrive concept for the BMW i vehicle architecture is instrumental in enabling a brand new vehicle character to be married so harmoniously with BMW eDrive, a technology that is already nearing production standard. The horizontally split construction consisting of two self-contained elements intrinsically focuses on the technical requirements of the electric drive train, and helps to produce a design concept, sense of spaciousness and driving experience that are unique to BMW i cars.
The passenger cell forms the core of the Life module, which is built from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). BMW i is scaling new heights for automotive engineering by making such extensive use of this high-tech material. Because it is extremely light yet very strong too, CFRP opens up tremendous scope for design and therefore has all the right credentials for translating the inimitable and unmistakable BMW i design idiom into a wide array of variants. On the BMW i3 Concept Coupé, the drive system, chassis and energy storage unit, along with the structural and crash functions, are once again incorporated into the Drive module that is made chiefly of aluminium.
Measuring 3,964 millimetres in length, 1,768 wide and 1,555 high, the BMW i3 Concept Coupe can be noted for its highly individual proportions. When compared directly to the BMW i3 Concept, the new study has a broader, lower-slung look that serves to highlight its agile nature at first glance. The wheelbase, on the other hand, is unchanged from that of the standard BMW i3 at 2,570 millimetres.

Breaking News: BMW M6 Gran Coupe
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
At a private Nurburgring event, BMW unveiled to a selected group the all-new BMW M6 Gran Coupe.
The M6 Gran Coupe will go on sale in Summer of 2013, while the official web debut will take place next month. the car will make its first public appearance in January at the Detroit Auto Show.
Design wise, the M6 Gran Coupe builds atop the recently launched M6 and 6 Series Gran Coupe, and if our sources are correct, this will be the best looking M in the current fleet.
The model displayed at the event featured the expensive, track-focused M ceramic brakes.
The power will come from the same engine as the new M5 and M6, a high revving 560 hp M TwinPower Turbo V8 mated to a high torque 7-speed M-Double Clutch transmission (M-DCT). It remains unknown if BMW will offer a manual transmission for U.S. customers as we have seen in the F10 M5.
Top speed will of course be limited to the usual 155mph, and 0-62mph should be achieved in 4.5 seconds.
When it comes to market in 2013, we anticipate the base price of the M6 Gran Coupe to be around $120,000. The only more expensive BMW in the fleet will be the 760Li.

BMW M5 vs Jaguar XFR vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG
The Australian folks at CarAdvice got their hands on the of the hottest performance sedans on the market. The new BMW M5 goes head-to-head against the Jaguar XFR and AMG’s pride Mercedes-Benz E63.
The online magazines compares the three vehicles on the road and track, as well as on interior design and other features.
Here is an excerpt from the extended review:
TRACK ATTACK
Many M, AMG and R owners take their vehicles to track days, and some circuit work was part of CarAdvice’s week-long comparison test.
With dampers set to their firmest setting, engines and gearboxes to their most aggressive mappings, and stability control systems completely disengaged, the M5, E63 AMG and XFR are capable and entertaining machines on the limit.
A saturated track also provided an easier opportunity for each to showcase their talents for going sideways, aided by different takes on limited slip differentials.
Jaguar calls its electronic version an Active Differential but it was the least effective, making the XFR less predictable and enjoyable. When the diff works, the XFR is a beautifully balanced machine – despite the most noticeable body roll of the trio – that slides progressively. But all too often the XFR’s rear inside wheel would be allowed to spin up; revs would soar but without any meaningful momentum sideways or otherwise.
Steering that all three testers unanimously described as overly light also contributed to a consensus that the Germans again had the edge over the Brit.
The BMW M5 is certainly a great track car. It provides the biggest impression of stability both in a straight line and under heavy braking, and it also benefits from a set of Michelin rubber that gives the M5 both superior traction and front-end bite. That grip meant the 5 Series M car’s throttle needed a determined press on the gas to generate the desired slip angle, while on three occasions – with different testers – the M5’s electronics also had a panic attack while sideways.
Conclusion:
And the BMW M5 isn’t perfect, getting noticeably chubby around the mid-riff. It’s ballistic rather than balletic, and BMW may need to consider aluminium construction for the next 5 Series.
But the M5 is coated in an extra layer of civility that allows you to enjoy it purely as a supremely comfortable and cosseting luxury car before peeling away that mask to expose its thrillingly epic ability.
The BMW M5 is more than good.

Car battery maintenance tips for extended life
Your car's battery is the heart of its electrical system and the chief cause of winter weather start-up woes. In cold weather, the battery loses about half its strength while the demands on the battery increase. Low temperatures reduce the battery's engine-cranking power, and by thickening the engine oil, they also make it more difficult for your engine to turn over. Cold fuel doesn't vaporize well, which adds to the difficulty.
Almost all private and public vehicles that we see on major and provincial roads use battery for their electrical needs. Radio, lights, horn and the ignition system is dependent on the battery which is a component of the vehicle’s electrical system.
Some may be wondering why the vehicle’s battery doesn’t drain off quickly despite continuous and repeated use. This is because vehicles have their own charging system composed mainly of the alternator and voltage regulator. The charging system ensures that the battery is continuously charged every time the engine is running.
The most common type of battery vehicles use is the lead acid-type battery. These types of batteries have lead and lead oxide plates submerged in about 35 percent sulfuric acid and 65 percent water solution, creating a chemical reaction. The product of this chemical reaction is electricity.
Most often than not, drivers put tap water on batteries, unaware of its negative effects. Tap water has minerals that can ruin battery function, which would eventually slow down the electricity generation. It is necessary to use distilled or de-mineralized water only on batteries to prevent break down.
Care for car battery
The battery is one of the most important parts of the vehicle that needs continuous check-up and maintenance. It is important to know the appropriate care to extend its operating life and at the same time, proper handling to prevent accidents.
Here are some important tips to consider in battery maintenance:
- First, wear eye, hand protection and the proper clothes are worn if you are going to personally check your battery. Remember, battery contains acid and protective gears can shield you from the corrosive chemicals inside the battery. When battery is mishandled, it may cause burns or more serious injuries. Once you are fully-geared, place the battery properly and make sure that it’s stable, not shaking or rocking when mounted, to avoid any short circuit.
- Check the terminals where the battery cables connect to be sure they are tight and free of corrosion. If corrosion is present, get a qualified technician to clean the terminals.
- The plates must always be submerged in water (distilled or de-mineralized) inside the battery but never over-fill your battery. The water level must not go below the recommended level to prevent rapid deterioration of battery plates. Fill to 1/4" below bottom of split ring (1 1/2" below top). Water should be added after charging. Filling before charging can cause the battery electrolyte to bubble over during charging. If plates are exposed, however, add enough water to cover the plates by 1/8" before charging.
- Don’t use sulfuric acid in refilling the battery, it is recommended to use water only for refilling. The sulfuric acid inside more or less remains the same throughout the battery life. (Some batteries do not require water refilling because they are sealed. These are commonly known as maintenance-free batteries.)
- Change the battery in case you happen to see any cracks, vents or swelled battery casing. Most likely, your battery is gradually failing and replacement is inevitable.
- Also, always make sure that the battery is always clean. Even a small amount of dirt can cause “power leak” causing uncontrolled discharge and electricity loss.
- Make sure the battery is firmly secured to its mounting bracket. An unsecured battery that shifts around can become damaged, and possibly cause short circuits. All exposed metal parts of the terminals and cables should be greased to prevent future corrosion.
- Aside from the battery, you must also check the electrical wirings and cables to ensure that there are no stray strands or damaged insulation (leading to exposed wires) that may cause electrical leaks and short circuits.
- Batteries come in many different sizes. When replacing a car battery, make sure you choose the right size for your car. When it comes to car batteries, bigger is not always better.
- The terminal clamp of the cable must be kept clean. Use a simple solution of baking soda and water in cleaning the terminal clamp especially when you notice the accumulation of white powdery substance around the electrodes. There are times the engine would not start if the battery terminal is corroded.
- In removing or cleaning the battery, remove first (-) ground cable followed by the (+) cable. If you are going to reinstall the battery, the (+) cable must be put first before the (-) ground cable. In this way, we can avoid short circuit if the wrench accidentally touches the grounded part of the vehicle.
- Use warm water and a mild detergent to remove grease and dirt from the plastic surface of the battery. This is important because a layer of dirt can actually act as a conductive agent, causing the battery to constantly discharge slightly.
- Do your part in protecting the environment by simply returning used batteries to battery shops for recycling. Recycling is one good way to reduce pollution.
- Your mechanic can load-test your battery to see if it is capable of sufficient charge on below-freezing days. Replace it if it does not pass the test.
- “The battery is literally the life spark of your car,” says Dave McMullen, director of marketing at EnerSys, makers of Odyssey Dry cell Batteries. “Your automotive winterizing routine should include a full check up and cold-weather prep for your car battery.” If you live in climate that is excessively cold, think about obtaining a battery or engine heater. The heater will help the battery start the car by reducing the power necessary.
- Read your owner's manual before disconnecting your battery to ensure that computer or radio memories are not lost. You may need to enter a password to get these components functioning again. These passwords are normally included with the owner's manual packet that came with your vehicle.
- Always disconnect the battery before doing anything else. Remove the cable from ground first, which is usually the negative terminal. This disconnects the battery from the car’s entire electrical system and minimizes the risk of causing sparks. Then remove the positive terminal connection. Never use a screwdriver to pry off stuck-on battery cable terminals because you could damage connections inside the battery post. Instead, use a battery puller tool to remove cable terminals.
Recharging guidelines for maximum life
- Recharge immediately after each use
- Use battery charger matched to the battery's size
- Do not overcharge; an automatic charger that turns off or on with a timer is your best bet
- Always slow charge a deep cycle battery; never fast charge or boost charge it
- A 10-12 hour charge with the appropriate charger at the correct amp rate will usually bring your battery to a full state of charge from a deep discharge

BMW: “FWD vehicles will be embraced just like BMW SUVs”
Without a doubt the news of a FWD bimmer has shook up the BMW community and many have wondered if the company is selling out, or even if these cars will become popular.
BMW’s vice president of product and service planning, Dr Frank Neiderlander, told CarAdvice that the FWD platform will be adopted just like the first SUV, the X5.
“We had a similar decision in the ’90s with the X model [the X5], where suddenly we went to a more upright car concept, a more off-road-oriented car, a different seating position, different weight distribution, AWD,” says Dr Frank Neiderlander. “So we had a totally different concept to the previous [rear drive passenger car] layout but still at the end we managed to bring this soul of a BMW to this kind of concept. That is why we are so confident we can do the same for such a concept [as the front-wheel-drive BMW].”
The Aussie magazine says that production version of the Active Tourer will adopt a 2 Series badge, and the FWD family will include about 20 models, with MINI vehicles as well.
Furthermore, Dr Frank Neiderlande says that BMW wouldn’t be building the FWD vehicles if they don’t retain BMW’s core values.

Hard against the Pacific Ocean and bracketed by mountains, the area is teeming with wildlife, and its vistas present visitors with a real feast for the senses.
It’s also home to one of North America’s most daunting race tracks: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Given such scenic splendour, it’s not hard to understand why BMW chose Monterey as the location for its 2013 model preview.
Most of the company’s North American lineup was available to drive on both the track and the roads surrounding the circuit. With so many vehicles to drive, and just one day to do so, some choices had to be made. So I focussed on models that are either all-new or have been substantially updated for 2013.
ActiveHybrid 5
The ActiveHybrid 5 features a gasoline/electric drivetrain, in this case a 300 hp straight six-cylinder turbocharged powerplant and a 55 hp electric motor.
The system is designed to use just the electric motor as often as possible, primarily in city traffic. When more power is needed, such as for passing, the motor works in concert with the gas engine.
A start/stop function disengages the gas engine when the car comes to rest at traffic lights and stop signs, to reduce fuel consumption. Regenerative braking captures kinetic energy expended when the brakes are applied, converts that energy into electricity and feeds it back into the car’s battery.
On twisty and undulating California roads, the system constantly switched back and forth between gas and electric propulsion. A large screen in the centre of the dash provides constant updates. A detailed schematic of the car’s chassis uses blue and red colour-coding to indicate the status of various systems.
The ActiveHybrid 5 possessed similar driving dynamics as the other BMWs: quiet, powerful and refined. The eight-speed automatic works seamlessly with both the gas engine and electric motor, the steering is sharp and the handling is secure.
7 Series
BMW’s full-size sedans have been significantly updated for 2013, most notably in the engine department.
The output of the TwinPower Turbo V8 that powers the 750i/Li models has been increased by 45 hp and 30 lb.-ft. to 445 and 480, respectively.
Mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission (now standard across the line), the new 750 posted a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds.
As for fuel efficiency, official numbers from Natural Resources Canada haven’t been confirmed, but testing in Europe showed a 25-per-cent improvement.
On the road, the 750Li zipped along quite nicely for such a large sedan. Power delivery was smooth and the cabin was suitably quiet, yet a nice rumble could be heard when the V8 was pushed hard under acceleration.
All 7 Series models feature fuel-saving technologies, including auto start-stop, brake energy regeneration and an Eco Pro mode.
On the inside, the understated and refined interior remains unchanged. The iDrive system, which I found quite easy to navigate, has been redesigned, and the optional Bang & Olufsen sound system sounded great.
The Canadian 7 Series lineup has been expanded to five variants for 2013, with the addition of the 740Li xDrive.
M6
The M6 (offered as a coupe and cabriolet) was easily the sexiest car at the preview. Its flowing lines cut a sharp, striking profile, especially in Sakhir Orange (similar to copper).
The M6 is the newest addition to the M family, and marks the return of a model that was last in the lineup in 2010.
Powering the rear wheels is the same engine that powers the new M5, a 4.4 litre TwinPower Turbo V8, which cranks out 560 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque.
Despite having two fewer cylinders than the powerplant in the previous model, the V8 cranks out 12-per-cent more horsepower and 30-per-cent more torque, and is expected to improve fuel consumption by 30 per cent.
Getting all of that power to the ground is a new seven-speed, double-clutch, automatic transmission. Officially dubbed the M DCT with Drivelogic System, it features automatic and manual modes. Paddle shifters are optional.
The M DCT also offers three shift programs for both automatic and manual modes, with the lower setting the most efficient and the upper setting delaying gear changes until the engine reaches higher revs. The dampers, shocks and steering can also be adjusted from mild to wild, thanks to buttons located on the centre console.
Despite having a curb weight of 1,930 kg, the M6’s performance belied its bulk on the road. Acceleration was brisk, especially in D3 and S3 modes, where the shift patterns were best suited to match the engine’s immense output and handling/ride felt well-balanced. A pleasant growl penetrated the cockpit under hard acceleration, which enhanced the experience.

Ski-Oriented BMW X1 Coming to 2012 L.A. Auto Show
The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition will feature unique equipment installed by ski manufacturer K2.
The model — which builds off the BMW X1 xDrive28 xLine or the xDrive35i xLine — includes a roof rack, rails and a BMW original roof box (it offers about 16 cubic feet of extra cargo room). In the cabin, there's aluminum trim, all-weather floormats and a fitted luggage compartment mat. The model comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and doorsill strips painted in a special matte sliver color. There's also a pronounced X-shaped decal wrap on the door, wheel arches and roof box; it’s a polarizing look for sure. The Powder Ride Edition comes in seven exterior colors.
The big draw for the model is the special edition K2-manufactured ski and snowboarding bag and a pair of K2 LTD Power Ride skis.
No word yet on pricing. We’ll have more information on the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show.

Rumor: BMW M750i and 728i launching March 2013
One of them, the previously rumored M Performance variant of the 7 Series, M750i. The MPA model will join the other M-tuned vehicles that launch in the last year, M550d, X5 M50d, X6 M50d and M135i. The BMW M750i will cater to customers that are looking for the ideal blend between a luxury sedan with an aggressive look and sporty ride. The rumormill churns out that the engine of choice is likely to be a V8 TwinTurbo with a 4.4 liter displacement and increased power output – 450 horsepower.
The xDrive system could also be offered as an option.
The question remains on how different will the M750i is going to be when compared to a regular 750i treated with the M Sport package? As seen with the other M Performance Automobiles, the new M-tuned models stand out through their superior chassis and driving dynamics. If and when it goes on sale, the M750i will be priced above the 750i model, but certainly below the 760Li flagship.
At the lower end of the engine range, BMW is preparing a new surprise. In an effort to match the competitors’ offerings, the Bavarians are looking to offer a 728i model with a four-cylinder engine. The engine of choice would be the N20B20 2.0 liter four-cylinder unit, but likely assisted by an electric motor, as Audi offers in their A8 hybrid. In addition to the 245 hp of the N20, the small electric motor will not only increase performance but also reduce fuel consumption significantly, and delimit the new entry-level engine in the BMW 728i from the 740i.
As we have learned recently, there is a new push in Germany by large corporations that require the company’s cars to be considerate of CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, and a 728i model could become the executives’ new darling.
For the time being, we’re labeling this as rumors, until a second confirmation reaches our ears. Stay tuned!

2013 BMW 750Li, 760Li, and Alpina B7 First Drive
Normal 0 false false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
The last time we had our hands on a BMW 7 Series, the 740i beat out six other competitors in our entry-level full-size luxury test. It goes (almost) without saying that we like that car very, very much. The challenge for BMW's engineering team then was a tough one. For the big 7's mid-cycle refresh, how do you make the best car in its class -- says us -- even better? BMW was kind enough to host us for a day of track and canyon driving at the most excellent Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca so we could see what exactly they've done to the 2013 750, 760, and Alpina B7. Absent were the 740 and the 7 Series ActiveHybrid, the latter of which now features a hybridized version of BMW's 3.0-liter N55 twin-scroll turbo inline-6. Even without driving those two I can tell you that BMW is pretty dang good at this whole luxury car thing. Note: all cars driven were the long wheelbase Li variants.
Before we get to the why, let's discuss the what. As in, what did BMW change for the 2013 model year? Starting with the exterior, the front end is much more elegant. Most noticeably, the lower air intakes and fog lights have been reworked. The lights are now LED (unless you opt for the M Sport package) and the intakes are organic looking, with added splashes of chrome. Headlights feature LED-piping accents and the wing mirrors have turn signal repeaters. Also, the two big kidney grille openings feature 9 slats for 2013 instead of 12. Out back, the bumper has a large chrome strip across it and the taillights have more contrast between the black and red sections. Bottom line, the new 7 Series looks much improved too these eyes, especially when sitting on shiny 21-inch wheels.
Changes to the inside of the big Bimmer are even more numerous. The headline news is the latest version of iDrive (4.2 for those of you keeping track). It has more bells and whistles, of course (voice to text capability so you can email on the go), but the part I like best is a faster processor (1.4 GHz) with way better looking graphics. The screen can also render faster, which makes following a navigation route even easier. There is huge amount of detail offered on smaller screens between the tach and speedo, as well as on the heads-up display, and its equipped with a 200-gigabyte hard drive. Another trick is that when you're in a city, the "virtual 3D" map shows buildings and land marks in scale. While of dubious use ("Hey, there's Paris Las Vegas!"), it's simply cool. Non-electrical changes include slimmer front seats and extra servings of shiny chrome.
What we really care about, however, are the mechanical changes. Principally, the engine, which gets a nice bump up in both power and torque. Compared to the old 750's N63 engine, the new N63 TU is still of the 4.4-liter twin-turbo twin-scroll V-8 variety but instead of 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, it makes 445 horsies and a walloping 480 pound-feet of torque. That's an increase of 45 hp and 30 lb-ft. Who doesn't love that? Even better, the torque plateau is flat and enormous, with the max 480 pound-feet available from 2000 to 5000 rpm. Almost as important, for 2013 both the 750 and the 3.0-liter twin-scroll 740 get ZF's excellent, fast-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, a high-torque version of the units found in BMWs like the 3 Series and the X3 as well as several other cars ranging from Dodge to Rolls-Royce. You also get engine start/stop and an Eco Pro mode. BMW claims that even with the extra grunt, fuel consumption is actually improved by as much 20% under pretty close to ideal circumstances. An amazing feat if true, though as always, caveat emptor. Oh, and the 7 Series now features rear air springs across the board. Right, enough chit-chat, let's drive.
First up for me was the 750Li. Right off the bat, I was all smiles, but let's get the gripes out of the way up front. The seats, especially the non-adjustable seat bottoms, are not nearly as supportive as they need be. Despite its XXL size, the long-wheelbase 7 is capable of some snappy dance moves. Sadly, you're sliding all over the place, or at least your butt is, because there's plenty of back bolstering. I didn't find the seats particularly luxurious, either. They're just sort of seats. Pity. I'm also not a fan of rear air springs in performance cars. You might be saying, "The 750Li isn't a performance car!" to which I counter that 480 pound-feet is the same amount of twisting gumption found in the Corvette Z06. This sucker hauls. The problem with air springs isn't so much turning, which this car does fine. The trouble is when you turn and then turn the other direction. As the car rolls, the weight transfers from one side to the other and the air suspension can't react fast enough. The result is an odd, slightly disconcerting heave motion. In other words, the rear end moves around when you really start chucking the car back and forth. Again, pity.
That's the bad stuff. The list of positive attributes about the 2013 750Li is much longer. The engine is fantastic. Cars this large shouldn't launch as quickly, but it does and let's all be thankful for that. Plus, that epic wave of torque is just so damn easy to ride. You can go from cruising to passing in nothing flat. There aren't any paddles to speak of, but you can use the gear selector to manually pick your gears. Speaking of the tranny, like every other ZF 8-speed I've driven, I am boggled by how quickly this one shifts. I've driven dual-clutch units (like the one in BMW's M5/M6!) that seem slower. I mentioned the new iDrive earlier, but you really have to watch the map render in real time to appreciate just how good (and helpful) it is. While not world class, the brakes have the stuff necessary to haul this big boy to a quick stop. I hope it goes without saying that every single luxury bell and whistle in existence is also tossed in. Put simply, that new Mercedes-Benz S-Class had better be excellent because BMW has a winner on its hands.
Of course for some people, 445 horsepower is akin to walking. That's why, for a few dollars extra, BMW will sell you the 760Li. Just kidding about that few part, the difference in price between the $90,000 750Li and the $140,200 760Li is $50,200. Holy high roller, Batman! You could get a really sweet 3 Series for that kind of money. You'd also wind up with 12-cylinders between the two cars, just like the 760Li packs into one. You also get 535 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, an increase of 90 ponies and 55 pound-feet over the 750. That said, BMW seems to be in the pick-a-power-number-out-of-a-hat business, meaning that the engine feels much stronger than the numbers indicate. Is the big engine worth it? There's no polite way to say this, but if you're still pondering the question then you've never driven a V-12. What a peach of an engine. Wait, the N74 is not a peach. It's schweinebraten with all the trimmings. Und strudel and a couple shots of schnapps. I simply adore it. That said, the top shelf 7 Series doesn't have the (relatively) nimble moves of its smaller-engined brethren. Is the extra weight from the 6.0-liter V-12 to blame? Maybe. Or maybe all that extra power gets the 760Li into situations that the car wasn't tuned to handle. Before we spend too much time pondering this conundrum, let's look at the other go-fast option, the Alpina B7.
I've long admired Alpina as the thinking man's tuner. Instead of just going for monster power, they go for drivability. One of my favorite expressions (at times attributed to former BMW ad man Bob Lutz) is "Americans buy horsepower and drive torque." Alpina's philosophy seems to be total car development, not just screaming hot rod motors, though the car is, well, potent. Power climbs from the 2012 B7's 500 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque to 540 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. I'll save you the suspense. The 760Li's monster V-12 feels faster to me. It also sounds better, though I should note that during shall we say "spirited driving," all three cars have way too much sound insulation and road isolation. That's double-paned glass for you. BMW should reach into their own magic hat and at least offer the M5/M6 artificial engine sound via the stereo as an option. Anyhow, while noticeably quicker than the still quite fleet 750Li, the Alpina B7 is no 760Li. Until BMW decides to build an M7 (which would practically put Alpina out of business), this is as supposedly sporty as 7 Series get.
The Alpina B7 does handle better than the 760Li. In addition to essentially everything else, Alpina retuned the suspension and the resulting jumbo sport sedan feels more composed than the heavyweight V-12. I personally found that the even lighter 750Li (hey, everything's relative) handles even better, but the B7 does have two big advantages the other two don't. One is buttons on the back of the steering wheel that let you change gears without removing your hands from the tiller -- to be clear, tough but odd-feeling buttons, not paddles. The other is excellent, track worthy brakes. At least they felt that way up on the winding road. Speaking of the track, the Alpina B7 was the only new 7 Series I took on Mazda Raceway. It did pretty much OK, kind of almost keeping up with an M5 piloted by a better driver. Both cars had been lapping all day and by 3:00 pm (when I was in the B7), the brakes were cooked (er, the brake fluid was cooked). All that said, the Alpina B7 is a big boy, most certainly over 4500 pounds and therefore not an ideal track car. Still, it's pretty damn engaging for a full-size yacht and, at $132,395, a bargain compared to the 760Li.
Given my druthers, I'd combine the agility of the 750Li, the brakes from the B7 (before they spend 6 hours on a big brake zone track like Laguna Seca), and the relentless forward thrust from the stud-engined 760Li. Since that's fantasy world stuff, I declare the best of the new bunch to be the 750Li. Sure, it's got less power, but 445 hp from a twin-turbo V-8 is only "less" in a bubble. A tiny, privileged bubble. Now we wait for that new S-Class so that we can determine who is the master of the full-size luxury pantheon.

BMW reveals Zagato Roadster at Pebble Beach
Earlier this week, we snuck a peak at the BMW Zagato roadster in dark photos sent from BMW. After its reveal on the lawn at Pebble Beach on Friday, we’ve found out a bit more about the one-off drop top.
It only took six weeks to go from drawing to finished concept, according to BMW. The car came on the heels of the BMW Zagato coupe, which we first saw at the Concourso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy.
“We set ourselves the challenge of preparing the car in time for the renowned Pebble Beach concours,” explains Adrian van Hooydonk, senior vice president of BMW Group Design. “It was only with the expertise of both companies in the manufacture of high-end one-off cars and another display of outstanding teamwork that we were able to finish the car on schedule.”
The Zagato roadster has classic sports-car proportions with a sweeping hood and short rear end similar to the coupe version. BMW’s kidney grille sits up front with z-designs instead of the normal bars. A pair of ports are cut from the hood to extract hot air.
A bird’s-eye view shows the hallmark Zagato double-bubble roof, extending from the rear, through the roll bars and onto the hood.
The rear of the roadster looks low and wide, with a spoiler extending the width of the car. Brake lights are surrounded by black accents, leaving a small circle for BMW’s roundel. Underneath, a diffuser directs air out from under the back end, while exhaust pipes sit on each side.
The show car sits on 19-inch wheels with a five-spoke design, which BMW says was inspired by a propeller. The founders of both BMW and Zagato have roots in aviation. It’s painted a shade of gray, setting off the black and brown accents.
Like the coupe, we expect this roadster can be driven and registered legally in most countries. Whether BMW will produce the car in greater numbers remains to be seen.

Revolutionizing the BMW M3
The performance sedan, code-named F80, is expected to appear as a lightly veiled concept at the 2013 Geneva motor show, debuting the appearance and mechanical package of the M division's eagerly anticipated Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG rival. A showroom-ready version with a production interior arrives at next year's Frankfurt motor show, BMW sources say.
If this timeline holds, the next M3 should be ready for North American sales in winter 2014 at prices that likely will top the $60,995 sticker of the 2012 M3 coupe, owing to the car's higher positioning and greater levels of standard equipment. The last version of the M3 sedan went out of production in October 2011.
In a departure from previous generations, this M3 will be launched exclusively as a sedan, a move that brings it in line with the larger and more expensive M5. Several sleeker-styled models—including a follow-up to today's coupe and cabriolet—will then be added to lineup, which will be supplemented by a Gran Coupe variant. But, as part of a different naming process, it will eschew the M3 name for M4 nomenclature.
The M3 sedan will follow the example of the larger M5 in receiving a host of functional but subdued styling changes in comparison with the standard 3-series sedan. This means a deeper front bumper with large cooling ducts for the forced-induction engine, a lightly altered kidney grille, wider front fenders with the signature air vents, unique exterior mirrors and wider door sills. In back are a subtle trunk-lip spoiler and a deeper rear bumper that incorporates a diffuser to cool the rear differential.
Despite BMW's increasing commitment to carbon-fiber construction, the M3 will retain a steel platform structure, though certain parts of the body shell, including its hood and doors, will be fashioned from aluminum.
While the turbo straight-six is set, rumors to the contrary have been flying about the M3's mechanical package, with some even suggesting that the car would receive a 3.3-liter V6 engine based around the 90-degree architecture and cylinder capacity used for the larger M5's 4.4-liter V8 engine.
“This is utter rubbish,” a high-ranking source said. Packaging considerations aside, there is no reason for BMW to abandon its tradition of straight six-cylinder power—neither from a performance nor a production standpoint.”
But purists might still question the decision to go with a turbocharged engine that will bring an end to an illustrious era of naturally aspirated powerplants for the M3. Additionally, for the first time since its inception in 1986, there will be no manual gearbox.
In a bid to match the performance levels offered in top-shelf Mercedes and Audi products, the engine in the BMW is expected to deliver about 450 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the 2012 M3 makes 414 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8.
The next generation will come with a standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, similar to the transmission in the M5 but with altered ratios, offering both manual and automatic modes. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled variable M differential, offering 100 percent lockup.
Plans for an all-wheel-drive version of the car were considered but rejected. Instead, BMW is planning to introduce an M335i with all- and rear-wheel drive as part of its new M Performance lineup (see sidebar).
Underpinning the M3 will be an aluminum-intensive chassis with a longer wheelbase and wider track than today's model, giving the car a significantly larger footprint. We don't have all of the final specs on the next-generation M3, but it's safe to say that this sedan will be an agent of change for BMW performance machines.
